Hey there!
It's been a couple of days since I last wrote, so I think it's time to give you a little update from Singapore. Today, we have spent most of our time at the Gardens by the Bay, a nature park here in Singapore. The entire park comprises three gardens: Bay South, Bay East and Bay Central. The gardens aim to be the world's best with more than a quarter of million rare plants. The gardens are spanning 101 hectares (one hectare = 10 000 square kilometers), so the park is massive in size!
We got told that the park was crowned as the World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival 2012. It also won the best display building for its conservatories, Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. The Gardens by the Bay had its official opening on June 29 this year, and it's expected to become one of Singapore's biggest tourist attractions.
We learned among other things how plants disperse their seeds, how mushrooms benefit rainforest communities and how plants adapt to adverse environments.
Today's fun fact: Did you know that The Double Coconut palm has the largest seed in the world, and its nuts can weigh more than 15 kilograms?
And before I stop writing, I have to tell you about the most delightful ice cream we've ever tasted. Between our visit to the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, we stopped at "Seventh Heaven". We got to choose between a selection of more than 30 handcrafted ice cream flavors, including signatures like sea salt caramel, passion fruit, black sesame, pecan and butterscotch, as well as 8 exclusive floral flavors that was only available at the Gardens by the Bay.
I'm pretty tired right now, so I think we'll go to bed within a few minutes. Tomorrow, we're going to spend some time in Chinatown. I promise that either Gina or I will post some pictures!
