G'day, mates!
We're now entering our last day here in Sydney, Australia, seeing as we're off to Singapore tomorrow night. Because we're leaving tomorrow, we decided to finish the day at Sydney Opera House. We got tickets for the famous show "Lucia Di", an opera based on Sir Walter Scott’s 19th-century tartan bestseller The Bride of Lammermoor. Though before we went there, we went to one of the local cafes, and had some tea and lamingtons. Lamingtons is a plain cake cuisine from Australia which is shaped into a small square and then is dipped into the melted chocolate. We can assure you it was delicious, and it's an absolute try if you go here.
The Opera house itself was astonishing. We asked a local Aussie what he knew about the construction, and he told us that "The Shells", as in the actual roof, were originally of undefined geometry, but early in the design process, the "shells" were perceived as a series of parabolas supported by precast concrete ribs. However, engineers were unable to find an acceptable solution to construct them, because the technique was too expensive. Though later on, he could tell us, the engineers found a solution towards the problem; The shells could be created as sections from a sphere. This allowed arches of varying length to be cast in a common mold and a number of segments of common length, to be placed adjacent to one another to form a spherical section. So, good bye Australia, we've had such a pleasant time here and we'll miss the astonishing city of Sydney. We're now leaving Austalia, pointing our nose towards Singapore.
